Basically, Sony Vaio S is amazing. The body on the whole laptop is covered with a black sturdy plastic making you feel material that is very solid. It’s cool to the touch, though, so that makes you think it is metal, like Sony says it is. The screen is attached to the main body of the computer using a chrome hinge that attaches to the back of the base, so it is not even seen. The whole computer is very thin. The screen is crazily thin and the body is thin enough to keep it definitively 1 inch. Noticeably, there is a rather large bezel around the screen, and the bezel sticks out from the screen just barely instead of being continuous with the screen. The webcam is placed as it normally is above the screen; however the integrated microphone is oddly placed on the front lower edge of the computer under the wifi switch, which seems very awkward. The bottom of the computer is mostly solid, with a few screws for removing a cover to get to the battery, hard drive, and ram, and some intake vents for the fan that then exit under the screen hinge. There are 2 rubber covers protecting contacts for the docking station and sheet battery. Annoyingly, these covers are very small and once removed, there is no place to store them, so they are quite easy to lose.
Keyboard/Mouse:Both are pretty good. The keyboard has isolated keys that give a satisfying click when depressed. My space bar does make a weird squeak when pressed though, so that is a little annoying. The backlight is kind of a dull purplish color, and its activation and duration options can be modified in the Vaio settings program. The mouse pad tracks and responds very well, but it has one glaring flaw: for some reason, Sony used some weird off brand track pad that does not support multi-touch scrolling. At this point in computing, people expect that. Above the keyboard are the two speakers (which I have to say do not sound all that good), an eject button for the disc player, the STAMINA/SPEED switch for the graphics card, indicator lights for the various locks, the power button, and 3 other buttons. The Assist button launches Vaio Assist (a help program), the Web button launches your browser, and the Vaio button is programmable. In between the two mouse buttons (which are quite satisfactory) is a fingerprint sensor. I didn't know if the laptop would actually come with this fingerprint sensor, since it was only in some of the pictures on the website and was not mentioned when I ordered it, but it is there. Unfortunately, it is terrible. It often requires several swipes on several fingers before it correctly identifies. The software that came with it can automatically input usernames and passwords on websites, but it launches an annoying little popup, so that is just bad.
Screen:
The screen is awesome. Great viewing angles side to side (almost 180 degrees), good from below, but bad from the top (but that's forgivable). The 1600x900 resolution is impressive. coming from a 1366x768 15.6 inch laptop, everything looked tiny on this screen and Iwas astounded at how much room I had. The screen has vibrant colors and can be bright enough to see in direct sunlight thanks to its matte, nonreflective finish. It also has an automatic brightness sensor that is a little slow but still helpful. Also, the screen is crazy thin. . . .
Battery:
This laptop is the top of its class. I spent a long time searching for a laptop that had a good processor and
good battery life, and this was pretty much the only Windows contender. when I put it in stamina/powersaver mode with low brightness, it goes for 8 solid hours of web use and documents. Switching to speed/highperformance drops it down to around 3.5-4, with balanced being somewhere in the middle. Software:
Sony bundles quite a bit of software, but most of it is un-intrusive. There is an annoying little dock thing at the top with a bunch of preinstalled programs in it, but that can easily be closed/disabled forever. Luckily, Norton can be killed forever in the initial bootup. Sony bundles its own advanced settings program, which toggles things like keyboard backlight, advanced power settings, screen options, etc., so that is useful. Otherwise, pretty useless. Once, the battery decided to stop charging at 48% until unplugged and replugged it, then it stopped at 52%. This was annoying, but was fixed by a reboot, as was the time when the Fn key stopped working. Little annoying things like that.
Great laptop. Get it. With SSD, highres screen, sheet battery preferrably.
