The Windows 8 Consumer Preview (here's the Windows 8 download) updates the look of the Developer Preview, adds a lot of new features and revamps a few old ones.
The round Start button is gone, the Metro-style Start screen remains and yes, you can only pick from nine colours and five patterns for the Start screen background.
But there's far more to the Consumer Preview user interface than the Start screen, and far more to Windows 8 than the user interface.
There are new ways of switching between apps, as well as more updates to the desktop tools. There are changes under the hood to file copying, power management, security, networking, hardware support and more
A feature dubbed "Windows To Go" was the first in the list, meaning it is possibly the most significant addition. Visser said as a "fully manageable corporate Windows 8 desktop on a bootable external USB stick", this feature will allow IT organisations to support the "Bring Your Own PC" trend.
Another new element, Directaccess means that remote users will be able to access resources inside a corporate network without having to launch a separate virtual private network (VPN) connection. Visser said that this will aid IT administrators because it will keep remote users' PCs in compliance by applying the latest software updates. It can also be implemented with the existing IPv4 infrastructure.
A Branchcache feature will ensure that users' PCs cache files, web sites, and other content from central servers so content is not repeatedly downloaded across the wide area network (WAN). A component called Applocker will alleviate issues by restricting the files and apps that users or groups are allowed to access and run.
Enterprise will also have a variety of enhancements to features previously seen in the Windows 7 equivalent edition, namely RemoteFX and Windows Server 2012. These improvements will allow use of 3D graphics, USB peripherals and touch-enabled devices across any type of network (LAN or WAN).
Last in Microsoft's list of Enterprise features is the Windows 8 App Deployment element. Visser said this will permit "domain joined PCs and tablets running Windows 8 Enterprise [to] automatically be enabled to side-load internal, Windows 8 Metro style apps".
In addition to these new features, Microsoft said that the Enterprise edition will include all the facets of Windows 8 Pro and will allow customers to get improvements to Windows fundamentals, such as end-to-end security and better manageability.
